Back in 2010 I adopted Zelda my mustang from Best Friends Animal Society. Specifically from Horse Haven at BF. Jen Reid, the manager and also a fabulous natural balance Master farrier, rescued Zelda from a dude string from a a really awful, cruel situation. She was about to be sent to Canada to fill some cat food tins and Jen, took $50 out of her own pocket and brought Zelda back to BF. When I took her home I understood how deep her issues were and how much I had to learn to help her. She didnt like people at all. She didnt want to be caught because that meant being ridden and she hated that too. She was basically done with humanity. They had not served her well. People told me to get rid of her because she was no good - people, some of fairly high repute - actually told me she was worthless. Zelda is one of the smartest horses I have ever known. She is fearless. This is a video of last weekend at the Panhandle Reining Cow Horse Show in Lubbock, TX where Zelda scored 126 out of 140 and brought home a check! Thank you Trevor Carter for being my teacher and for your unwavering help and kindness. You gave us the courage to do this. Huge thanks to Buck Brannaman who told me Zelda was a soldier back from the front lines of war and that I should respect what she has suffered and spend however long it takes to help her. Big thanks also to Cat Roberts Parks for her guidance and understanding. I know this sounds like an awards show but it kind of is - there are some pretty great horse folk out there helping people like me with horses like Zelda . They deserve recognition and kudos. Next year Zelda and I will do more shows and she will have a purpose to fulfill which always has made her happy. I am grateful for all the teachers out there - in all walks of life - who dont give up on their students no matter what.
