Back in April, 2011, Honolulu Magazine came out with its 43 Things Every Local Must Do segment. It is about the most comprehensive list of things to do This series of posts will be dedicated to my good friends whom have arrived on our plutonian shores from afar to live in Hawaii, recently: 1. Have a Sunday Longs Routine Say hi to your neighbors, catch up on gossip, score deals with your coupon book and scoop the faster check-out at the cosmetic or photo departments. 2. Own Pidgin to Da Max! When it came out in 1981, my mom went out and bought it, to the chagrin of my Pop who didnt want his boys (my brother Bruce and I) to speak it. 3. Jam on your Ukulele I am not very good with instruments myself, but if you have a chance to hang out on the streets, sometimes there will be someone sitting to the side just strumming away. Priceless 4. Never travel, even interisland, without bringing back Omiyage. Coming back from Maui, manju from Sam Sato’s is a guaranteed pleaser. From Big Island, it’s mochi from Two Ladies Kitchen. From Kauai, Hamura Saimin offers lilikoi chiffon pies, frozen to survive the trip back to Oahu. From Molokai—deer jerky. 5.Kick off your shoes Everyone knows you take off your shoes before entering the house. Kinda weird when your on the mainland and you do that as a local, unless the house your going into is that of a formal local. More posts later on this topic!
