Back in my years as a social care support worker, one of the - TopicsExpress

Back in my years as a social care support worker, one of the service user groups I looked after were people with autistic spectrum conditions. These were mainly children and teenagers but some were well into middle age too. They had a wide range of needs and abilities, most were highly intelligent in some areas while displaying a complete lack of awareness in others. Some were able to socialise relatively well while others had a great deal of psychopathy or such violent reactions to triggers (things that upset them) that security was the first thing you thought of when you did anything with them. It was clear that most of the them were (most of the time) trying so hard to do things that more neurotypical people take for granted as a piece of piss, that life was really difficult and often really scary for them due to the difficultly they had processing information, taking account of context or seeing things from the point of views of others. One thing that would make their lives so much easier would be a simple increase in autism awareness in our communities. An increase in understanding from other people both allows for greater tolerance and better interaction, helping both the autistic person and the other community member(s) feel safer around each other.
