Back in the 70s and 80s, my family went to E. 7th Street in the Village, next door to McSorleys Ale House, to have made custom-made sandals, by Barbara Shaum. I moved to Vermont in 1982, shortly after she made me one more pair. When I came back from Vermont, 15 years later in 1997, I looked for her place next to the Ale House, and it was gone. I figured she retired. I was wrong. We were in the Village back in May, and I started to tell my wife, who was thinking of getting a pair of custom-made footware, about Barbara. On a lark, I googled sandals in the Village, and - surprise! She is 87 and now on E. 4th Street, still making sandals! I got a pair for my wife for Mothers Day, then later decuded to get a pair for myself. I just picked them up today! Here is a short video of her 5 years ago, when she was 82. McSorleys, BTW, was the last men-only bar in New York City, and it was to great fanfare that Barbara was the first woman to order a drink during business hours.
