Back in the dark ages (sometimes referred to as 1992) Paul - TopicsExpress

Back in the dark ages (sometimes referred to as 1992) Paul Olchvary Merchant was a student at the University of Delaware where he and others formed an all male a cappella group which they named The Hen Harmonics. They wore blue jeans and white t-shirts and looked like they should be on a street corner in Brooklyn in 1950. There were plenty of concerts on campus throughout the semester with all of the a cappella groups performing. I remember one girl asking me after class if I was dating Paul from the Hen Harmonics and when I admitted I was she said, I thought he had a girlfriend, he is dressing so much better. In 1994 the men got together and decided to rebrand themselves the Ychromes. They exchanged white painters overalls for the blue jeans and white tshirts. At that time Curt Cobain was the reigning monarch of alternative music and grunge so the painters overalls were edgy but also cheap which fit their budget at the time. I was always struck by the fellowship between these men. They were always supportive of Paul even after he was a member in graduate school with a wife and infant daughter. Gerard Warwick was an accepted and valued member at a time when few men on campus were brave enough to be out. Here is video, shaky, grainy, dark, of the first time they sang their signature song in the painters overalls. I love how Gerry is the most handsome of all and the only one sporting a shirt and tie with his grunge overalls. Paul is the skinny guy in the center, back when he had a full head of thick blonde hair like corn silk. https://youtube/watch?v=S6PCkFMDLqU
