Back to the kennel for the third time this year for home games and it certainly is becoming a very comfortable home away from home. Not only do North Heidelberg look after us very well as hosts, their ground was in magnificent condition again. They also managed to conjure up a sunny and rain free day for a change. To top things off we had a perfect strike rate for all three teams. The match reports follow. Thanks again to Jeff Powell, Maurice Gonella and Bear for their reports. High quality once again. Supers: Its been a long time between drinks for the Supers and a home game against a side below us on the ladder provided us with the perfect opportunity to reverse the trend of recent results. When you get to our age though, you know very well that wins dont just happen, you have to work your ass off as a team to earn them ... and thats exactly what we did on the weekend. Some great news at selection was the return of Bongo who has missed the last 4 games with a back injury after being arguably our best player in the first three rounds. Also coming into the side were Paul Rowley and Gareth Long but the outs included Hoppy, Glenn Torey, Leeroy, Paul King, Leigh Wilson and Dave Gayfer. Kingys pre game message was to believe in ourselves and to play siren to siren for the full four quarters, as it has been little lapses during games that have cost us the opportunity to push for recent victory. Another poor start in terms of putting a score on the board had us on the back foot early. Vino, Richie, Noodles and Bongo (who eased himself back into the action with at least a dozen possessions in the opening quarter, loping down the wing picking up kicks at will) were pumping the ball forward but a lack of conversion was again curtailing our ability to apply scoreboard pressure, with set shots being sprayed for behinds or out on the full. Melbourne in contrast, seemed to be getting maximum reward for effort and went into the first break in front to the tune of 4 points. The forward line got themselves going in the second quarter and with the midfield again providing plenty of supply, Roosy, Longy, Adrian and Creaky were dining out, kicking 7 goals for the quarter and taking a 6 goal lead into half time (which could have been more if defenders such as Benny refrained from kick chasing in the forward line trying to get amongst the action, only to butcher shots on goal - hes spent five minutes as a back man and hes already kicking like one)!! With shortened quarters in the second half due to an over efficient time-keeper in the 1st quarter (work it to our advantage next time please Bondy), it was important to make the most of our opportunities, which we did but the opposition really made us work for our goals in the 3rd quarter and we only managed to scramble 4 goals to their 2 for the quarter. It was in the final quarter that we finally broke the game open, with Dave Witchell finding plenty of the footy and setting up goals as well as kicking his own, the midfield swarming forward in droves and Longy cashing in up forward to finish with a bag of 7 which was an incredible effort from the big fella considering hed been in hospital with a virus during the week and was a doubtful starter. Belly finally frustrated the opposition ruckman into jawing off once too often after dominating him all day in another BOG display and had him sent off and the backline capped off a great performance by keeping the opposition scoreless for the quarter. After an early scare, this was a comprehensive and confidence boosting win for the Supers so lets hope we can take this momentum into our next big game against Northern Districts who sit equal with us on the ladder after dropping their last four games. Final Scores: Diamond Valley 2. 16. 11. 125 defeated Melbourne 6. 4. 40 Best players; Bell, Bongo, Vino, Richy, Longy, Corey Wilson, Noodles, Adrian and I could easily name 6 others in a fantastic team performance Goals: Gareth Long 7, Simon Kayrooz and Creaky 2 inc a SG each, Belly & Adrian Rossetto 2 and singles to Witch Richie Young and Lincoln Burns Masters: We were treated to a glorious day of football against Melbourne with the sun shining and light winds. This round was also prostate cancer awareness rounds and we were visited by Ted Whitten from the E.J.Whitten foundation to remind us of the importance of getting tested. Thanks to the Vets and Legends that helped out this round. 1st Quarter We had plenty of the ball inside our 50 this quarter. It was great to have Mick R back on the side. His run through the middle and into the forward line really makes a big difference to our team. DV 2-2-14 Melbourne 0-2-2 2nd Quarter The back line did a great job this quarter keeping Melbourne completely scoreless. With OB, Dan and David working hard all day and Peter taking a few high fliers DV quickly turned Melbourne’s attack around and made us look dangerous. Pearcey and Justin worked well in the wings and the followers Patty, Brian, David, Ob, John and Mick turned this quarter a free flowing game. Jason, Julies, Mo and Mick finished of the attack with some accurate kicking. DV 7-7-49 Melbourne 0-2-2 3rd Quarter Things didn’t go quite as well this quarter with 5 missed shots at goal including a famous one by Mori. Melbourne also managed to sneak their first goal past the backs. More effort was going to be required of everyone. DV 9-12-66 Melbourne 1-2-8 Final Quarter Matty asked us to take a few risks and switch the ball around to give our turn a rounds more effect. This worked well with Mo being very dangerous in the centre square and Jules and Jason some nice grabs in the half forward line. Doc and Frank did a good job playing against the younger Melbourne backs. Mick was outstanding again and Justin managed to bounce a goal trough from the centre square. Ob at full back picked up the ball from the last line of defence before pushing past 2 Melbourne forwards and setting up another great turn around. A great effort by all the team! DV 11-16-82 def. Melbourne 2-3-15 We need wins from the next 3 games to give us a chance at playing finals. Best: Mo, Mick R, Peter, Luke, Mick H. Goals: Mick R 4, Mo, Julian, Jason 2, Justin Over 47’s: The 47s were first out again this morning and set the club on the right track. We had the benefit of the over 50s having a forfeit so we had plenty on the bench for a change, but our coaches did have some selection dilemmas, what with players turning up late “again” and then the added problem of some of the guys that put their hands up to play only wanted to play half a game as they had other things to do, so once Bondy and Simon had sorted out who was here to play and who was filling in half a morning, we got started. Melbourne with 20 players who had come to play started with a bang, 1st bounce goal, some of our players were still shaking hands and exchanging pleasantries before they realised game was on, Bondy (cock roach) who started on the bench could sense something amiss with our troops, especially when Melbourne slotted another sausage to our no score. Now let’s be fair to our lads as at this stage of the game we still hadn’t got the ball over the centre so it was proving a bit difficult to score. Bondy went to work acting as our runner he started ringing the changes and with great results as our first foray into the forward line Bondy B snagged our first sausage, Simon rallying the backs started to hold Melbourne Dyso and Frank ably supporting Simon. As the quarter drew to a close we were peppering the goals but were of line with our shots but we were back in the game. What a difference 20 minutes make as we started the second quarter the way Melbourne had started the first, Ash and Wilber sharing the ruck duties were giving our blokes first use of the ball and Patty Sas Steve Gamble and Johnny Utting were doing the crumbing on the forward line as Bondy B and Pittsy were giving the options up forward, the goals were now raining in, good to see Tony Nico chime in with a sausage as he has been sorely missed with his injury which he is now over. Bondy (c/r) put Shane in the centre for the third quarter and told the boys at all cost to go through him and this they dually did resulting in Pittsy getting on the end of some nice work and finishing off with a couple of snags. Dave Gleeson back with as after a break was now with Simon and Brian controlling the back line and making it very difficult for the Melbourne forwards. The final term we again dominated Melbourne, Bondy (c/r) finally put himself on the ground and teaming with Macka and Tony Nico dominated the centre, I think our superior fitness through our hard work at training had paid off. Bugger me I just made myself sick with that line of crap, truth be known they probably train less than we do if that is possible. Jokes a side guys and this is to all our teams when you only have 27 to 30 blokes at Thursday night training for four teams you can understand why the better sides in the comp give it to us. Thanks to the fellas who took their turn on the bench especially Bondy (c/r) (three quarters) the ones that didn’t grumble that is and thanks to Thommo for giving me a hand with water bottles as he was having a rest from playing so he without being asked put his hand up to give a hand to the TEAM. . 1st quarter 2nd 3rd 4th DV 1-3 DV 5-5 DV 7-5 DV 10-8 Mel 2-0 Mel 3-1 Mel 4-1 Mel 6-1 Goals – Pittsy 4, Bondy B 2, Stevey G 1, Tony Nico 1, Patty S 1, Johnny U 1, Best – Patty Sass, Ash, Shane, Simon, Pittsy, Macka,
