Bahrain update: An Iranian lawmaker says while the world is focused on regional developments in the Middle East, especially the crisis in Egypt, the Bahraini regime is taking advantage of the international inaction to escalate its crackdown on protesters. “While international organizations are busy with developments in Egypt, the Al Khalifa regime is trying to extinguish the flames of the popular revolution in the country by stepping up its crackdown on the Bahraini people,” Seyyed Nasser Mousavi Laregani said on Thursday. “The secret service of the Al Khalifa regime is attempting to stop a new wave of peaceful protests by pressuring political prisoners and their families,” he added. The Iranian MP said that mounting pressure on protesters and giving greater powers to security forces foreshadows the same fate for Bahraini rulers as that which has befallen the other dictators in the region. He stressed the Saudi-backed crackdown over the past two years has failed to silence Bahraini revolutionaries or dissuade them from striving for their legitimate demands. Laregani further criticized the international community for its inaction toward developments in Bahrain, which has paved the way for the massacre of Muslims and promotion of Shiaphobia in the Middle East.
