Barry Dear Doc, I I hope life is treating you well and that you - TopicsExpress

Barry Dear Doc, I I hope life is treating you well and that you like snow. So far this trip I have been in thailand, Cambodia, Laos and now have arrived in Calcutta India. Very interesting in deed. Definitely like no where I have ever been before. With the suburbs Kolkata exceeds 15 million inhabitants. I am going to rent a car and driver (2 dollars per hour) to take a better look around. I am staying at a very old hotel, the Old Kenlworth, a little pricey at 66 dollars per night but the room is is 35 x 30 in the old English India colonial style. The English owner is a big outdoors man and heavily involved in save the tigers. He is setting me up with a journey deep into the Bengal tiger reserve near the Bhutan and Nepal border in the largest mangrove forest in the world. Not a tour, I should be the only white man in hundreds of miles. 700 pound man eating tigers, 22 foot long crocodiles, lots of moneys and wild elephants. Sounds perfect. I will try and get you some photos of the wild life. Not too close up I hope. I have advised mother not to join me in India, there was a cafe bombing in Goa last week targeted at tourist and with the constant preoccupation of dealing with beggars, the worst drivers in the world, Cambodia being the previous record holder, and the likely hood of getting serious stomach ailments, you have to keep your mouth closed when you shower for example, it is just not a good environment for her. I have left Terren, my nephew who joined me for one month, in Vientiane Laos waiting for some documents from the University of Chiang Mai. He has decided to stay and learn Thai. He is a good kid and he should have no problems now that I have shown him the ropes. If you are on face book heck out the new pics, we got some good ones. Getting around India will I think prove to be a challenge as even with my limited experience of one drive from the airport to my hotel I believe I have uncovered the worst drivers in the known galaxy, with Cambodia being the previous record holder. The buses look like medieval metal war horses scared from too many battles, strait out of of a bad Mad Max movie. Kolkata is the only city on earth that still has human pulled rickshaws mixed in with the traffic chaos. The sound of blaring horns resonates the air long into the night here. Best and warmest regards, Barry
