Based upon experiments in pigs, it was found that if you put a pig on ice (literally, cool their body to 10 C and stop the heart while on a heart/lung machine), surgeons have hours to fix the damage and learning/memory is intact afterwards. In the researchers own words: Induction of hypothermic metabolic arrest (by thoracotomy) for repair of complex traumatic injuries is feasible with preservation of normal neurologic function, even after extended periods of shock from an intra-abdominal source of uncontrolled hemorrhage.
