Batzilla the Bat 8 mins · Gattons bats have had a near miss this afternoon and they are now heading back up into the trees with a disaster narrowly avoided. These bats have suffered so much as only a small number survived the January heat event before they were subjected to dispersal activities later in the year. The Lockyer Valley Mayor recently stated that ... its high time the government were told the facts, and that is their method has failed, Cr Jones said. We tried it their way at enormous expense to council and it hasnt worked, its a simple as that, so lets now get serious about the problem and start culling. The reality is these animals carry insidious diseases such as Hendra and lyssavirus, both of which are lethal to humans. As the Mayor of the Lockyer Valley, you would expect an educated response but alas, no. As science has already proven, Hendra can only be contracted from sick HORSES (bat carers are living proof of this fact) and Australian Bat Lyssavirus is a saliva borne virus that can only be transmitted via a bite from an infected bat (thought to be in less than 0.5% of the free living population and post exposure vaccinations are readily available that are considered 100% protective.) Flying-foxes are highly mobile and they fly great distances as they pollinate and spread the seeds of biodiversity. Culling colonies will achieve what? Well, nothing really but it will help to validate the Qld Governments unscientific, unethical, unsustainable and proven cruel approach to flying-fox management.
