Bay cabbie survives hell ride Nerves of steel after being stabbed in the neck. DAVE SAVIDES | 7 August 2014 08:30 Call-a-Taxi owner Hansie Wichmann and Sr Vanessa Gounden of Netcare The Bay Hospital lend support to taxi driver Belinda de Bruin, who survived a stab wound to the neck after being hijacked on Sunday night PHOTO: Dave Savides THE last fare she picked up on Sunday night almost ended up being the last day of a Richards Bay taxi driver’s life.Belinda de Bruin was lucky to survive being stabbed in the neck, driven around for nearly three hours and dumped on the side of the road after her taxi cab was hijacked shortly before midnight.Speaking from ICU at Netcare The Bay Hospital, the story she told bore testimony to her tremendous courage.‘I picked up three men in front of Bellingham Park at around 11.30pm and took them to Aquadene.‘When we got there a fourth man joined them and they hijacked my cab.‘I was stabbed in the neck and was pushed aside so one of them could get behind the steering wheel, but he had trouble trying to drive and they made me take over again.’Travelling towards Mtubatuba, Belinda kept pressure on her neck to reduce bleeding, and drove as slowly as possible in the hope of a passing vehicle seeing her cab on the isolated stretch of road.‘The men were aggressive, swearing and shouting at me for driving so slowly but I managed to convince them it was because I did not want to attract undue attention.‘Although I knew I was in serious trouble, my mind was functioning and I remained calm.‘After what seemed like an eternity they threw me out on the road leading into Dondotha.’By this time is was close to 3am and luck was on Belinda’s side as almost immediately a car came across her and ‘Good Samaritans’ took her to the Mtubatuba police station, from where medical assistance was summoned. She was transferred to hospital and was discharged on Tuesday. The VW Polo taxi was fitted with a Tracker system and was soon located in dense bushes at Dondotha. zululandobserver.co.za/43302/bay-cabbie-survives-hell-ride/
