“Be independent of the good opinion of others.” I love this quote, as it’s so where I’m happiest in my life, when I’m practicing this - focused on what God thinks of me, not what anyone else thinks! Talking to a friend yesterday she told me of a hurtful experience when someone posted some terrible comments about her on Facebook. “Nikki, I’m human and it hurts when people say mean stuff about you” she said. I replied, “Ok, let’s look at the person who said these comments about you. What’s so fantastic about them and their life?” “Nothing” she responded. “So why are you allowing what they said about you hurt you?” I explained to her that we’re all Bozo’s (clowns) on the bus and none of us are perfect! We all have our stories and mistakes we’ve made in life – me included! Now I take whatever “hurtful” things that are said about me and see if there is any area I can improve in and if there is I run with it! If there is not, I simply ignore! “You’re getting lazy!” is what my hubby said to me late one night. My 10 year old daughter Julie jumps in, “Mommy, he’s right, you are getting lazy.” My hubby goes over to her to shake her hand, “Julie, you’re hired as the family lawyer!” I responded, “This is what I get after showing up to work and working so hard lately, you never have anything nice to say!” We then playfully pretended to have a court session as I called my other kids to testify that their dad never has anything nice to say to anyone, just always full of complaints! I called my 6 year old son to testify and asking him the last good thing his dad had said to him. He responded hesitantly, “Ahh…Ummm…When…He….” Then after he couldn’t think of anything he finally blurted out, “Nothing!” I rest my case! We had such a great time with that with me concluding that my hubby may not say nice things to us, but he certainly shows us how much he loves us and that’s more important than him just saying it! And about that lazy comment? I ignored it! I’m a writer, not a worker! LOL! “Be independent of the good opinion of others.” WE GO WITH GOD!
