★ Be kind – today, tomorrow and everyday One of the most important sublime states we should all cultivate is kindness! To be able to practice kindness on everything and everyone around us, we must do two things. First, we should overcome hatred and second, we must love ourselves. Many a times, we take pride in saying “I hate traveling or I detest the high levels of pollution.” Accepting life the way it is and facing challenges and struggles with kindness in the heart and a smile on the face is the disposition of an earnest man. Now, one may wonder, doesn’t loving oneself amount to self-love or selfishness? No, it doesn’t. On taking a deeper look at our inner self carefully, we’ll come to realize that a person who doesn’t love himself cannot love another. The law of the universe is such that if we aren’t kind to ourselves, we would not know the beauty of showering it on others. There was once a poor boy that did odd jobs to pay his way through school. One day as he was returning from school, he started feeling very hungry and he didn’t have enough money to buy himself a meal. So he decided to ask for a meal at the next house. One look at the beautiful girl who opened the door and the boy couldn’t gather himself to ask for a meal, so he asked for a glass of water. The girl saw his poor state and thought he was hungry. So she brought him a glass of milk, instead. The boy graciously drank the milk and asked her how much he owed. The girl replied, “My mother has taught me not to accept money for kindness.” Howard then thanked her from the bottom of his heart and left. Many years later, the same girl, now a young woman fell critically ill and before giving up on her the doctors decided to give it one more try. They sought the assistance of a specialist. As soon as Dr. Howard heard the name of the town his patient was from, he rose with eagerness to help. On seeing his patient he instantly recognized her. Determined to save her life he worked very hard through night and day and saved her life. When the girl hesitantly opened her medical bill with anguish and anxiety, she was surprised to see a note that said “Paid in full with one glass of milk.” The kindness that we’re talking about is not the superficial kind that would come and go as the heart desires. The kindness we wish to nurture is one that is selfless and does not have an ulterior motive. Therefore, it is our duty to consciously practice the act of being kind, with the help of meditation and introspection. Kindness created through meditation will never adopt the love-hate dichotomy but will remain for eternity. A selfless mind and a kind heart will elevate us to a spiritual being; one that is devoid of anger, fear and filth and sows the seeds of kindness on the path he treads.
