Because today has been a relatively good day, I decided to go back and read the really horrible, nasty reviews of Come Heckle Christ from Edinburgh. Whilst the show did very well over all and got plenty of lovely reviews, there was one night in particular, full of reviewers, where nothing really worked and the audience were virtually silent; it was a truly lamentable experience. I was heartened to read though, that the main criticisms of the show were: a) my impression of Jesus was bad (I dont know what their frame of reference was) b) I broke character... c) that I might have prepared material (utterly missing the point/concept of the show and proving they likely didnt read the press release) and finally d) that the audience werent very funny Every performer wants nice reviews and critical acclaim. Sometimes, you get precisely the opposite, and it makes you feel like youre the least funny, least talented person on the planet and that your entire life is a farce of Euripidean proportions. I had a point originally, and Ive forgotten it now. Im sorry. Im genuinely sorry. It was probably something like, if you get bad reviews in the Melbourne Fringe, dont worry, because people are dying in Africa. And other continents too. Death everywhere really. Sorry for wasting your time.
