Beds on Sunday Report: A LEVEL RESULTS: Redborne Upper School set a new record as EIGHT students offered Oxbridge places There were beaming faces and much celebrating at Redborne Upper School this morning (Thursday) with a record number of A Level students on their way to Oxbridge Universities. Seven pupils from the Ampthill sixth form will be continuing their education at the famous institutes, with one boy still awaiting the results of a final exam paper to add to his four A stars. The day was particularly special for former head girl, Emma Woodhouse. Not only did Emma receive the two A star and two A grades required for her English Language and Literature degree at Oxford, but today she also celebrates her 18th birthday. Its really overwhelming, says Emma, who will join Brasenose College at the start of the academic year. I went on an open day at Oxford designed to encourage students from state schools to read English, and found everyone really friendly. I understand that a huge percentage of my classmates at Brasenose will be privately educated, and so it makes me very proud to have come from Redborne, she adds. David Bailey, whose son, Matthew, achieved four A star grades and will read Chemistry at New College, Oxford, says that the school has been very supportive of those students hoping to go to Oxbridge. Redborne has developed a culture where its okay to succeed. The eight of them have become a group of friends, which has been incredibly helpful - and they all share the same taste in bad films! adds David. But its not just the future Oxford and Cambridge alumni who have achieved highly in their exams. With a double distinction star, equivalent to two A star grades, distinction star and an A star to her name, Ellie Gazeley will be heading to the University of Bedfordshire to study Midwifery. I was so nervous on the days leading up to results day. I decided to choose a university that was closer to home. Now Im excited for to witness my first birth, says Ellie. Sixty percent of Redborne A Level students achieved A star, A or B grades in their examinations, with an over all pass rate of 99.8 percent. The schools government Value Added score now puts the institute into the top nine percent of academic centres in the country. Redborne Upper School Principle, Nigel Croft, said: Todays results are fantastic and a credit to all staff and students who have worked so hard. As a state comprohensive, Redborne takes on pupils of a wide ability range. Its great to see that those of all abilities are achieving or beating their potential.
