Been busy all day but these are my own thoughts after the Netherlands friendly and the announcement of the final squad. 1. Unless Michael Essien will be deployed as a central defender, in my humble view he will not be of much help to us in midfield. His experience should bring authority to the back four and that should make up for Jerry Akaminkos unfortunate injury. If Essien declines to play in defence, then we will have a real challenge. 2. The Netherlands match clearly showed that Kwadwo Asamoah is at his best playing from a deep lying position in midfield, instead of on the flanks. For me, he has to start with either one of Rabiu Mohammed or Afriyie Acquah in central midfield. 3. I fail to understand why David Accam was called up in the first place; not given even a minute on the pitch and then dropped. The Kwesi Appiah could as well have called up any of the local outfield players and given him the chance he gave Accam. Personally I would have taken Accam to the World Cup because he would have helped us attacking down the left wing, but since we never saw him on the pitch for the Black Stars, I guess we will never know. 4. The events of last night and this morning for me shows that the technical team perhaps erred in not calling up Baba Abdul Rahman. This is because we are seriously short at the left back slot. Even though Harrison Afful can do a good job for us as well as Daniel Opare, it is going to be a long competition and suspensions or injuries could cost the team in the long run. As it is, there are three right backs in this squad and no specialised left backs at all. 5. The Netherlands game showed how important Asamoah Gyan is to the team in the hole. We have to pray that he stays fit because any injury to him would be catastrophic for Ghana. In a nutshell, these are my own thoughts. As a Ghanaian though, despite my reservations, I sincerely hope the boys do us proud, but as an objective journalist, wrong decisions could count against the Black Stars.
