Been drinking a good amount of almond milk lately, so this article pissed me off. The first warning sign is the writers associating almond milk with hipsters (my daughters are probably getting a good laugh about that one) because of course hipster-hate is just its own form of hipsterism. Second, he chose the most expensive brand of almond milk - Califa - for the comparison (they have a deceptively-shaped bottle and sell 48 ounces for the same price other brands charge for a 64 ounce carton). Also, he writes Im not saying your almond milk habit is destroying the planet or ruining your health ... Then why bother? And finally, yes, it takes water to grow stuff - Californians should probably water their almond trees more and their lawns less. The last time I looked almond trees were taking carbon dioxide out of the air and releasing oxygen, while the nearby dairy cows responsible for the writers beloved kefir were spewing methane and warming the planet. motherjones/tom-philpott/2014/07/lay-off-almond-milk-ignorant-hipsters
