Been revisiting the first season of MILLENNIUM recently - a series I enjoyed when it premiered in 1996 in the wake of Chris Carters X-FILES fame - and its even better than I remember. An incredibly dark, nihilistic vision of humanity and procedural examination of the struggle to make sense of what drives those among us to commit the most unspeakable of cruelties. It deconstructs illusions of authority, religion, family and the idea that imposed structure somehow creates immunity in peoples lives from realities theyd rather not face (i.e, the taking of ones innocence). Lance Henriksen is perfectly cast and conveys such history through his very presence alone, as do the rest of the seasoned cast. In many ways its remarkable that Fox green-lit a show of such outwardly grim intent in the first place. Then again, the complete change in trajectory come season two would explain its eventual downfall. Shame.
