Before I decided to work at a childrens shelter two years, I knew - TopicsExpress

Before I decided to work at a childrens shelter two years, I knew my patience would be tested to the max. And I thought I was prepared for everything I would see, but I was so. So wrong. Anyone that works with children knows that you have to want to do that job and you have to want to be there. You cant take a job working with children just for the money or just because its a job. Its more than that, it basically becomes a responsibility. Some kids are more negative than others and those are the ones that separate the ones who work in this field for the money and the ones who work in this field because they want to. I, myself, have found myself closing my eyes and counting to 10 several times out of extreme frustration. But some times when a kid comes in that is extremely negative and has extreme behavioral issues, I go and read their profiles. Its one thing to watch child abuse on the news and on Lifetime, but when youre literally looking at a victim in the eyes and you get to see what abuse does to a child and how it changes them, it changes you. It changes you forever. Some of the things I have read in these kids profiles are things youd see in a horror movie and each child is different. Some of it has literally brought me to tears. But after I read a childs profile, I dont find myself losing my patience and counting to 10 anymore because then I understand why they are the way they are. So, some times instead of judging someone by the way they are, find out why first. It just may change everything you thought that person and you just may see them from a totally different perspective.
