Before I started music school, I was in good financial standing, - TopicsExpress

Before I started music school, I was in good financial standing, my car was in good condition, I had hobbies and more hair :b. I lost almost all of that putting myself through college. Never in my life have I felt more like a failure than as a music student at the University of Alabama. Having to save quarters for lessons as a high schooler and digging holes for my first intermediate level trumpet, music was obviously important to me. But upon being exposed to music school and the college system in general, I am a bit disgusted. I spend countless hours sitting in classes with regurgitated facts spread on a PowerPoint. I can literally learn more with a few good mentors and an internet connection. Tuition raises every single year, but my scholarship does not. I dont have a choice. There is no parents debit card. I have to work. My school suffers because my time is spread thin. One might suggest loans so I could focus on my coursework. But starting off 70k in the hole for a profession that doesnt require a degree just doesnt make sense to me. People tell me that there are countries in which higher education (the key to eradicating poverty) is free. It does not make sense to me that a country with so much national pride would spend more money on bombs than books.
