[Before reading this post and telling me Ill find a job, I already know that. My job hunt is going just fine. Im merely venting my disgust with what I see.] So we brave, proud, few have some great companies looking out for us on the job front. I wont name the one I was on the phone with today as it was an overall positive experience but I put pressure on my new veteran rep to tell me the truth about where the hiring was happening. The answer was mostly at a level above the job board/ hiring manager level. Ok great, I feel good that I have this opportunity to take advantage of some veteran-based nepotism but what about that hiring manager? That hiring manager is not put in a position to learn anything about this experience except maybe in a top-down class that instructs them on what to look for. This does not show them how to actually do it. If the executives are bringing in veteran talent that is a huge waste of resources. A veteran should be able to get on a veteran job board and find hiring managers looking for them, not a position being posted there so that the hiring manager can post it and shrug, I dont know why were arent getting any veteran candidates, I posted on VetXYZBoard, I guess theyre just not qualified for these positions. Its not the managers fault, or the veterans, or even one company. Its a lapse in empathy between cultures. On one side you have people that have been told to get jobs done and they do them with incredible zeal and efficiency, often having to learn as they go. On the other you have a structured environment where risk-taking is only valued at the executive level up and bringing in someone with a resume from a completely alien environment is considered too scary, for a variety of reasons.
