Before the City of Lake Jackson, Texas welcomed us, the Lee family - in the 1970s, I was born in Hecyun Village, Zuoying District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan and lived the first 7-years of life in the actual home behind us in the photo. The structure was built in the 1940s and I fondly remember running all over the streets playing with the neighborhood kids (I even remember all their names - IN CHINESE!) My grandmother and grandfather lived happily in this house for over 70+ years... In the 1990s, the Taiwan government began a program to demolish these villages and replace them with highrises, giving the residents rights to live in the new apartments. In 2006, there were only 170-structures left, and those remaining were officially recognized as historical & cultural preservation sites. In the future, my children (Matthew & Lauren) and grandchildren will be able to visit this old home to see a time capsule of our families legacy...
