Before the last election, the Coalition promised that it would maintain Australias 20% Renewable Energy Target. After the election, the Coalition broke this promise, and more than a decade of bipartisan support for the RET in Australia by appointing a climate change denier to review the scheme. Unsurprisingly, this review recommended major cuts in the RET. With the support of the renewable energy industry, who relies on a bipartisan commitment to the RET for investment certainty over the long term, Labor entered into negotiations with the government to try to seek an agreement that would save the industry and restore investor confidence. Unfortunately, its now become clear that the government isnt interested in a reasonable outcome and is intent on destroying the renewable energy sector in Australia our of blind ideological extremism. Given this, Labors Shadow Minister for the Environment, Mark Butler has written to the government to tell them that given their intent on changes that would destroy the industry, theres no reason to continue these discussions. This is a terribly disappointing result for the Australian renewable energy sector and the nation as a whole. smh.au/federal-politics/political-news/labor-walks-away-from-ret-negotiations-20141111-11kkze.html
