Before using a chimney, fireplace, or wood burning stove, ensure that it is clean of debris. One of the main fire hazards with these devices is creosote buildup. Creosote is a natural byproduct of wood burning. It can build up on the inside of chimneys, fireplaces, and stoves, and can be a fire hazard if it becomes ¼ inch thick or more. You should have these devices inspected by a chimney sweep at least once a year, and more often if used frequently. In the event of a chimney fire, make sure everyone gets out of the house. Call 911. Cut off as much oxygen supply to the chimney as possible. If you have a fire extinguisher and it is safe to do so, place the nozzle in the chimney or stove, empty the contents of the extinguisher, and close the flue or stove door. If it is safe to do so, use a garden hose to wet the roof of the house to keep it from catching fire. When using a wood burning stove, the door should remain closed at all times unless adding wood or stirring embers. Using a fireplace curtain can also keep any embers or hot ashes from causing a fire outside of the fireplace.
