Behold, the Suncor Upgrader, one of the largest machines ever - TopicsExpress

Behold, the Suncor Upgrader, one of the largest machines ever built. It cost ~$10 billion USD to construct. It converts long-chain bitumen (a sticky semi-solid) into a more broad spectrum synthetic crude oil. The reason why this was needed is because most of the heavy crude on planet earth (which is easy to get) is gone: depleted. This fact alone should send warning alarms around the globe. Tar Sands mining is causing great destruction to the Boreal Forest. It has created a Pyramid of Sulfur the size of Cheops, so large you can see it from outer space! As ugly as the Alberta Tar Sands development is, it is certainly one of the great Modern Industrial Wonders of the World! Photos by Ken Ilgunas: kenilgunas/2012/09/day-7-tar-sands-of-alberta.html
