Being a dj / producer is a one of the best jobs in the world and - TopicsExpress

Being a dj / producer is a one of the best jobs in the world and all the perks are great but IT IS work and it is NON STOP. I cant just wake up and watch basketball or the latest HBO series. If I did, my workflow wouldnt be what it is. After working with DJ Muggs a few years ago and witnessing firsthand his dedication, I learned that you have to stay focused, healthy, happy and determined to produce the music that you believe in. Most popular artists are people who work, work, work...they dont sit back and watch others perform, they take the initiative and knock shit out in the studio. Another point of inspiration was a book by Russell Simmons called DO YOU. I thought the book was going to be about the industry but it wasnt. It was about yoga, meditation and the ups and downs in life that make you a wiser person, able to learn from mistakes and willing to keep forging ahead no matter what. Many people ask me how do I get into the dj / producer occupation and the truth is that these days it is way harder than it was in the 90s. Everything now exists in a virtual reality where those with expendable cash can pay their way to fame. So, the rules have changed and for those struggling at the bottom it can be tough. My advice is to build a team like Smog, TekLife, Juke Bounce Werk, etc. A team can share the burden of building momentum. But, everyone involved must live that shit everyday. No slackers, no druggies, no complainers, no jealousy, no bullshit. Just bring your skills to the lab and knock out that new shit to make heads get down! A friend of mine, Valerie Vonprisk would always say dont judge me and when I first heard her say it I thought it was funny. But, years later I realized that what she was saying had so much power. It enabled her to grow in her field because not only did she not accept judgement but she also didnt give judgement. She is on a magical trip in life doing makeup around the world and enjoying the gifts along the way. But, at the core of my ability to keep pushing is having a calm mind, neutral attitude, neutral opinion and drinking TONS of clean water (Alkaline preferred). So, stay focused, believe in yourself, practice, learn from others, work with others, help others because by doing so the same will return to you in time. For me, during the tough times I also say an Our Father prayer, that prayer has always worked for me but, remember when you pray you have to really mean it and get on your knees when you do.
