Being in a relationship with a firefighter is one of the most difficult things a person can do. If you get to that stage in your relationship with a firefighter, there are some rules you should put into place for yourself to help get you through those rough moments. It isnt often that people think of the people behind the scenes that support the firefighters. Rules to being in a relationship firefighter. Meals If there is one thing that a firefighters girlfriend learns early on, its not to count on meal time as together time. It is certain that as soon as you sit down to a meal with your family, the tones will begin to go off. Your firefighter will be out the door with a quick I love you and a kiss on the cheek. Meals have also been known to burn quite frequently for a firefighters girlfriend as she waits for him to come home. The rule in this situation is to expect this to happen frequently. As years pass, you will be more accustomed to the frequent flights out the door. Your meals will no longer burn because you will either put off preparing them if hes out on a call or you will learn that you shouldnt wait longer than ten minutes after the meal is prepared to eat yours. Firefighters will rarely complain if they have something they can pop in the microwave for quick reheating. Bedtime Expect that your firefighter wont be laying next to you all night. Frequent calls come over the scanner during the night. Firefighters brains dont sleep through calls. They respond to them. Expect to wake up during the night to your husbands absence. There is nothing to be alarmed about when this happens. Chances are, your husband will sneak back into bed without you realizing it. He will be there when you wake up in the morning, in most cases. Worry It is natural to worry when you are a firefighters girlfriend. He is doing a dangerous job. It doesnt pay to worry excessively though. Dont let the worry consume your every thought. Do something while he is on a call to keep yourself busy. Keep in mind the extensive training he had to go through to become a firefighter in the first place. The training is continuous and has to be taken whether your firefighter is a volunteer or paid. It also helps when you realize that all firefighters are brothers when they go into action. They have the same mindset and work hard at keeping each other safe. They go in as a team and come out as a team. If you keep these things in mind, you will then be able to understand that he is as safe as possible when out doing his job. Jealousy Being a firefighters girlfriend is not for the faint of heart. Jealousy can easily creep into your mind. You will sometimes wonder if he is really out on a fire call, accident or any of the other various things that firefighters do daily. The reality is that firefighting is the only mistress firefighters have time to worry about. There may be the occasional bad seed; for the most part, firefighters only have one thing on their minds. Dont let yourself get caught up in the jealousy issues. It isnt worth the time or effort because most times, it is just a figment of an overactive imagination. Check jealousy at the door. It wont do you any good. Firefighters seldom quit being one because of a jealous girlfriend. There are many areas of relationships where compromise is the key. Firefighting isnt one of them. Keep in mind that your better half isnt just doing something he loves to do. He is doing something he is driven to do. He has no more power over the mistress Fire than he has over breathing the air. Accept your role as a firefighters girlfriend. Take pride in the fact that your better half is one of the few that gives of himself freely. Dont make a big deal out of little things, give him a kiss when he goes out the door, say I love you, be careful. and be happy and relieved when he comes home. Being a firefighters girlfriend is one of the most honorable titles in the world. Wear it with pride.
