Being the mom to a daughter who has Down Syndrome qualifies me to say that the R-word applies to someone who has to fight battles every day not only to conquer their own limitations, but also against the pre-conceived notions of what society thinks the R-word means So just know when you say it in front of me, Im going to challenge you to spend a day with someone with an intellectual disability, and then you may reconsider your choice of words. Its not necessary, so I dont want to hear your lame ass exscuses. That word that I use to fear, well Ive learned that the derogatory manner you use it in is saying that she is the person that no one wants to be, but she is my hero!
