Belated Massenet birthday post... Monday was the anniversary of the birth of the French composer Jules Massenet, among the more prolific opera composers with over 25 titles to his credit. Massenet may not be as tuneful as Mozart, as dramatic as Verdi or as massive as Wagner, but his works are melodious and there are times when I enjoy nothing more than sitting back and letting Werther or Manon just wash over me. Here is one of my favorite Werther performance - from French Radio with a cast of native French speakers. An opera about a poet who loses himself to love, appropriately poetic - echoing the radio announcer at Act 1 - sung, admirably sung by tenor Georges Noré in the title role, soprano Geneviève Moizan as his beloved Charlotte, Liliane Berton as her younger sister Sophie, baritone Robert Massard as Charlottes fiance Albert and bass Lucien Lovano as Charlottes father The Bailiff. A lovely performance.
