Below is Head Coach Dave Smiths report of the game against Meridian. Meridian VP 1 Lydd Town 4 On Saturday we collected 3 hard fought points against Meridian in a game of 2 halves where we were poor in the first and good in the second. Merdian to their credit battled hard and had good individuals but overall we deserved the win and maintained our position at the top of the league. We started slowly and were guilty of giving the ball away to easy through sloppy passing the home side gained confidence from this and looked the hungrier of the two sides. We did come close in the 20th minute when Gary Lockyer combined well with Matt Collins and Matt fired just wide but apart from set pieces we were not creating too much as the game became edgy and a few bad tackles went and this trend led to Meridian being reduced to 10 men with 5 minutes of the half remaining when skipper Buster Beaney was on the end of a poor challenge. We should have then seen the half out knowing we had the advantage of playing against 10 men but we conceded a needless free kick that saw us fall behind when the home forward scored with an easy header to see us trail at the break. The second half started with us looking more like a side that is top of the league, we upped the tempo and changed formation to give us more attacking options and we were eventually rewarded in the 60th when Gary Lockyer played Matt Collins through on goal and he finished superbly. Five minutes later we took the lead when Gary broke through and again finished well. Meridian we now looking tired and being a man down was taking its toll. We added a third goal in the 80th minute when the home defender deflected Garys shot into his own goal and with only 2 minutes remaining a superb run by Ryan Norman saw him hacked down in the box and upped stepped Beaney to score our fourth from the resultant penalty and seal the win. So a good win, never at our best but we showed a good determination to get back in the game and the players do deserve credit for this. We know we can play better than this but to win when we were below par is good and everyone can be pleased with the result.
