Below is an excerpt from a letter about the new FDA Guidance document. The FDA is proposing that allowing laying hens access to the outdoors is dangerous to consumers of their eggs. Buying pastured eggs from a farmer may soon be illegal. What in the heck is the world coming to? Who is running the FDA??? The deadline is almost up (September 23) to comment on FDA’s proposal to require hen laying farms to restrict wild birds and other animals from all outdoor access areas for food safety reasons. These guidelines, aimed at reducing the risk of Salmonella enteriditis (SE), are not supported by science and are a move toward making pasture raised eggs illegal. Here is the link to the proposed guidelines. fda.gov/Food/GuidanceRegulation/GuidanceDocumentsRegulatoryInformation/Eggs/ucm360028.htm While these are guidelines, their purpose is to tell producers how they can comply with a rule. Following the rule is mandatory if you have over 3,000 layers and do not sell all your eggs directly to customers. For producers with less than 3,000 hens, the FDA rule suggests that you are putting your customers at risk for Salmonella by allowing outdoor access. To comment you need to go to regulations.gov. Here is a direct link but it should also come up if you search for enteritidis on the regulations.gov website. regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=FDA_FRDOC_0001-4090
