Below is an update on the Lightspeed grant/contest that some of you may be voted in. Also an update on the efforts of NTM in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Our US Chief Pilot is departing for the Philippines today to assess the situation for determining our long term efforts. Meanwhile our pilot co-workers are flying many hours taking much needed supplies to affected areas. LSAF - logo LIGHTSPEED AVIATION GRANT: We are happy to share with you that because you voted, New Tribes Mission came in 2nd Place Winner in Division 2 for the Lightspeed Aviation Foundation 2013 Pilot’s Choice Grant Awards program. For this we will receive a grant check totaling $8,000 which will be used to help defray the costs of equipping and repairing our R-44 helicopter in the Philippines. Interestingly enough, even though there were two divisions, each having five organizations to vote for, NTM received the 2nd most total votes of the ten groups. Thank you so much for your help. Because of how quickly our repair of the R-44 went with assistance from our McNeal staff as well as our team in the Philippines, we are able to use the helicopter in the relief flying that NTM Aviation is doing in the Philippines. Below is a report from our Sanford, Florida, Headquarters: On a Wing and a Prayer Pilots from Sanford-based New Tribes Mission providing Typhoon Haiyan relief DSC_0387 (2)SANFORD, Fla. (Nov. 18, 2013) — NTM Aviation, a division of Sanford-based New Tribes Mission, is helping provide relief to hard-hit areas of the Philippines by helping local authorities survey the damage left by powerful Typhoon Haiyan and delivering desperately needed food, equipment and medical supplies to remote areas. The mission’s two Cessna aircraft and one helicopter are now crucial cogs in the growing relief effort 10 days after the super typhoon — one of the most powerful tropical typhoons to ever make landfall — plowed across the island nation bringing widespread devastation. Teaming with MAF, local authorities, the Red Cross and other relief agencies, NTM’s aircraft have succeeded in getting supplies to remote areas not otherwise accessible. We have three aircraft in the air daily ferrying vital supplies into some of the most remote islands of the Philippines, said NTM DSC_0207Philippines Field Chairman Ross Ginn. The focus for NTM has been on the many smaller islands on the western side of the Philippines. “Our missionary work often takes us to remote regions, and NTM Aviation provides access to those regions worldwide,” said Pam McCurdy, an NTM spokesperson. “Our NTM pilots are skilled and know the general region well, and we are eager to provide any service we can to assist relief efforts.” Two missionary teams that were in the direct path of Typhoon Haiyan weathered the storm well. One of those missionary families crowded more than 100 people who lived near the water into their home during the stormy overnight hours. New Tribes Mission has reached out to its donor base to raise money to continue its Philippine relief efforts. Donations will pay for flight costs and other supplies needed to keep food, equipment and medical supplies moving to affected areas As of Monday morning, the effort had raised more than $43,000 of its $100,000 goal. Anyone wanting to participate in this effort is asked to donate to the Haiyan Relief Fund at usa.ntm.org/projects/haiyan-relief. All donations to the fund are being forwarded to the needs in the Philippines. “With the generous help of our donors, we will continue to provide assistance as long as possible,” McCurdy said. “Our mission work is more than just spreading the message of the Bible. Our missionaries become part of the communities where they serve, especially in times of crises and emergencies.”
