Ben nearly brought down the house in church this past Sunday when he carried his little trick or treat for UNICEF box up to the altar for Childrens Time. I remembered to grab the box off of my cabinet at work on Halloween so we could carry it with us while traipsing around the neighborhood. The boys looked at it while we drove home from school & I explained to Ben what the box & money is for: for people who dont have as much as we have - clothing, toys, food, medicine, cars, etc. No one gave any money while we were trick-or-treating so I wrote a check, shook it near Bens ear so he could hear the paper rattling inside, my mother-in-law threw in a few coins for good measure (now it *really* sounded neat!) and he scampered up to the front of the church, happy to show off his box with all his money in it. When Rev. Richard W. Neal commented on his box, Ben took the spotlight and ran with it...recounting pretty much everything I just described above and saying nearly verbatum the reason for the box. Ben frequently takes the stage at church and makes everyone chuckle, his parents included...and often makes us turn red with embarrassment at his inability to (or lack of) understand(ing) when it is appropriate to talk and when to just listen. Im incredibly proud to say that this is one thing he understood....that its important to give to others when we are so blessed to have everything we need...and then some. There may not be much under our tree this year...and thats ok. Theres excess in our hearts...
