Benjamin and I were in Target yesterday. He was trying to make a decision about a new school shirt. With a uniform, there isnt much to decide, but he was really taking his time. While he took a moment to play with color schemes, I noticed myself in the mirror and decided that I wanted to put on some make up. I opened my bag and grabbed tinted moisturizer. We were alone in the little boys section. Before I could even get the cap off, a man passing by chimed in, With an ass like that you dont even need make-up. He continued to stand there, seemingly expectant that I would respond. I gathered Ben and moved along. A friend texted me today that a similar situation happened to her at Wawa this morning. Theres a lot wrong with that statement--and Ill only point out a few. How women choose to dress or groom has nothing to do with men. It isnt a should or need kind of situation. It should be a very personal decision. The appearance of a womans body should not deemed more important than any other aspect of her being. You dont need to wear make up to make up for some imaginary deficiency. Men dont seem to realize how uncomfortable this behavior makes girls. We shouldnt feel unsafe or violated in public. You have no right to say something to me while I fix my make up in the car, while Im dressed up for a night out with girl friends, or to cheer up as I walk by. My husband doesnt need congratulatory comments because Im not a trophy. We arent asking for attention when we explore our outward identity--either positive or negatively.
