Benton County Veterans Memorial is proud to announce Sam Hays as the official photographer for The Moving Wall event. Sam is a Gulf War veteran who last served in the TN Army Natl Guard from 2003-2008. After 9/11 and an 11 year break-in-service, Sam re-enlisted to serve his country. Prior to that Sam was in the South Carolina Army National Guard from 1986-1992 and was trained as a combat photographer. Sam joined the Jackson NG unit, due to aviation being a strong interest of his. In 2004 he was sent to Arizona to become trained as an Apache helicopter repairman. In 2005 Sam volunteered for active duty with Rogue Troop, 4th/278th Air Cavalry Regiment, TN ARNG, Jackson, TN, to serve in Afghanistan in 2006-2007 (OEF VI-VII). Sam’s primary MOS was as an Apache helicopter repairman but, with a background as a photographer he was picked up by the Army 10th Mountain, 3rd Brigade, Mobile Public Affairs Detachment to complete missions as a combat photographer. Sam served most of his deployment stationed at FOB Salerno, near Khost Province, Afghanistan, along the Pakistan border. Sam completed his service with the rank of E5/Sgt., when separated from the TN ARNG in Feb 2008. Sam is currently working towards his Masters Degree at Murray State in the field of Occupational Safety and Health Sciences. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in the Spring of 2013 with a B.S. Civil Engineering/Construction Eng. Technology. Sam and his wife Tracy have been married 20 years and have one daughter Haley.
