Bernie Update: as you all are aware hes been battling likely Blastomycosis (fungal lung infection) since early November. As I posted in early December I wasnt completely satisfied with our regular vet, so after some inquiries decided on Dr. Prewitt in Ft. Smith AR. His clinic is a compromise: hes relatively close (compared to taking Bernie to Tulsa OK or OSU at Stillwater, etc), but also a highly recommended small animal vet, he graduated from OSU, etc. I was very impressed with Dr. Prewitt, his care of Bernie, his questions, etc. Were doing a urine test to decide for sure if it is Blastomycosis, although the vet highly suspects it is. Were keeping Bernie on the new itraconazole capsules for now since he seems to be tolerating them very well. And Dr. Prewitt gives Bernie a good prognosis (knock on wood), simply due to the fact that he acts better, he wants to eat and be active. What I find interesting is that hes seen 5 cats this year with Blastomycosis. 4 live in the exact same county as I do, and 1 kitty (the worse case, the one still undergoing treatment) lives on the next road off the highway from our road. We visited a great deal about potential sources for the fungus, and when the weather is more compatible hubby and I are going to do some work closing off potential damp areas under barns/houses that might be the source. Anyhow, I just wanted to keep everyone updated. We havent done any scans since early December to confirm improvement and probably wont until we get the test results back from the urine analysis, etc. Even though hes acting better, he still has a LOOONG way to go. But Bernie is OBVIOUSLY worth all the effort, money, stress and love hes putting us and all his followers through.
