Best Art Vinyl Award 2014: Celebrating the years Best Record Cover Art & Design The winners of the award ‘Best Art Vinyl 2014’ have been announced. The public has voted Dan Hillier’s stunning illustration for the debut album by Royal Blood. In second place, we find another debut from FKA Twigs, followed by another band of the year, Future Islands. bestartvinyl/previous-winners/2014.html The winning design, an original piece by Dan Hillier called ‘Falls’, was inspired by Victorian etchings with his now, almost trademark like, surrealist style. The artist is rapidly gaining popularity which has been confirmed by becoming 2014’s most popular sleeve design. He explains I made this image in the Spring of 2014 as one of four pieces made at that time, the others being Midpoint, Meta, Suit. I named her Pachamama after returning from Peru, where I had the privilege of sitting in ceremony with Shipibo master shamans in the northern Amazon and wandering about the southern Andes. Pachamama is a Quechuan word meaning World Mother, or Earth Mother. We are in desperate need of rediscovering our respect for her. Pachamama is profound intelligence and love manifesting as the apparent world, giving birth to everything, including us. Royal Blood approached me in the summer to make a new picture for their debut album, and then decided they wanted to use this piece, and its been lovely to see how far and wide it has appeared. Since the award started in 2005, there has yet to be a winning design that actually features an image of the band or artist, so with FKA Twigs as a runner up, it was refreshing to see the artist’s strong visual image graphically embellished by London based artist Jesse Kanda, which highlights what has already become a very strong visual identity. From striking heads to the dreamy headless image for the Future Islands LP entitled Singles which has become a striking visual icon for this break through album from the Baltimore based band. HEAR Records is the local distributor for ART VINYL.
