Best Friend All of us over the years have had to take time and sit and think about this loosely used word almost as used as Love. People throughout their lives have many different and many reasons to call others a Best Friend. Its one of the battles that rivals first love and the older you get sometimes they can intertwine. However my Best Friend wasnt the girl next door, his sister may have been the closet to the girl next door I could ever imagine.HAHAHA but dont say that to Daniel. Daniel loved his sister, only he was allowed to say anything about her. As a 10 year old telling Daniel his mother and sister were hot was not the best choice of words for two young boys. Daniel from a young age protected and fought for his family. I would say things just to get him mad and it would end up in Sandras livingroom. We would be full dressed for battle in Sandras or Brookes bed comforters; stretched over our heads so we couldnt see anything. By the time Sandra made it home we would have had her whole living room destroyed. Daniel close to breaking my arm both of us still not being able to see anything and neither one of us giving up no matter what was how I learned to be strong. My father taught me to be strong but Daniel inforced that quality.Daniel was my best friend and no matter how athletic or big I ever got Daniel would always be there to humble me. Daniel and I got our toes and fingers and faces painted on a regular basis due to both of our evil older sisters. We woke up one night in full barbie doll paint and we actually had portions of dresses on. Enough was enough we made a pact to get our sisters back and all of their friends. What followed was a beautiful arrangement of panties and bras all throughout George Hildebrand. So many memories of Daniel, he taught me computers when they first hit hard in the 80s and made it into peoples homes. He helped me understand things about them that would eventually help me pursue computer science degrees and join the Navy. The Navy is where Daniel and I lost contact along with many others. Daniel had flown on many planes before and been out to sea and been on cruises , however I was still just a kid from Burke County. The first plane I ever set foot on was to boot camp and I was so scared and full of excitement at the same time. I was 22 years old and I closed my eyes and I remembered my best friend telling me Its ok flying isnt that bad its fun I was scared at first too. I woke up and I was in Chicago in boot camp. No matter the years or the miles between us, Daniel and I found away to get in contact. Every time we did it was like nothing changed. We both understood we both knew. From tubing on the back of his father Dannys boat all those summers to leaving David at the bar.Two kids with only older sisters, Daniel became my brother growing up, and I was his. He later found out he had a brother and what a cool brother he was. We both looked up to David so much. He was older and had a beard. David was the coolest person two middle school boys could ever talk too. However his mom Sandra let us listen to Baby Got Back right when it hit the radio in her cadillac on the way to East Burke Middle School. We had so much fun just on the ride to school. Daniels father Danny gave me the best life advice I had ever had at a hardees after a full day on the lake. I cant repeat the advice but it basically meant if i was scared to eat something new at a fast food restaurant I would be single my whole life. I owe more to Daniel and his family than I could ever imagine. I have had shipmates and friends and leaders all die before their time but there is no training manual to guide you through so much pain. I had recently been divorced living alone in my apartment and I walked out back to finish a drink and I looked up and I saw Daniel. Immediately everything on my mind was erased and Daniel and I had a night I will never forget. He was always there for me whether I needed him or not and I miss my best friend and I always will. I used to play a song for Daniel to make him mad and it always worked. I always said Elton wrote this for you and he would punch me real good a few times. Daniel introduced me to so much music its not even funny. From Soundgarden, Queen, Sublime to Bob Marley to Tool he helped me find my own music.
