Kings Day was first celebrated in 1866, when King Leopold I stood as the head of Belgium. November 15 was then chosen as the feast day of Saint Leopold. On this day, the King is traditionally honoured with the Te Deum (a hymn that is sung during the solemn celebration and procession) at the cathedral o f St. Michael and St. Gudula in Brussels. The organization of this celebration is in the hands of the Catholic Church. An annual military parade takes place for the royal family late in the afternoon
