Best of 2014 Playlist Track 5: The War - Bob Mould 30+ years since Hüsker Düs Everything Falls Apart, Bob Mould has maintained the type of career integrity punctuated by experimental sidebars and prolific output that resembles the longevity of someone like Neil Young, Elvis Costello or even Bob Dylan. His last album, Silver Age was a love letter to fans of both his Husker and Sugar days without resorting to full-on rehash -- with this years Beauty and Ruin continuing that albums mission statement. Full of the power pop rockers that scratch multiple itches in my brain simultaneously, I could have picked any number of tracks for this playlist. I choose The War for its opening guitar riff that Mould could probably write in his sleep and the lyric “Listen to my voice/ It’s the only weapon I kept from the war.”
