Betty John, 85, of Mount Carmel, passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at her residence surrounded by family and friends. She was born on July 10, 1928 in Champaign, IL, the daughter of Homer F. and Delva L. (Spivey) Wilson. She married James G. John on June 4, 1950 in Palestine, IL, and he preceded her in death in 1988. Her son, Bradley G John was killed in 1992. She was also preceded in death by her parents and sister, Marguriete Ardis Wol f and a brother in law, Paul John. She is survived by her son, Kelly Wilson (Bonita) John of Owensville, IN. Three grandsons, Dylan John of Austin, TX; Dustin John of Nashville, TN; Nickolas John of Owensville, IN; great-grandchildren, Natalie Henson, Adam Bilderback, Isabel, Silas and Liam John; brother, Garver Wilson of Ann Arbor, MI; several nieces and nephews. Growing up Betty lived many places across America for her father was Superintendent of Transportation with Illinois Central Railroad. Betty graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She taught in Sadorus, Illinois and then spent 31 years teaching in District 348 including Belmont School, North School and Mount Carmel High School. She also started the Physical Education Program at Wabash Valley College and had the largest Girls Athletic Association in the state and also served on several state committees. Betty was an active member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ since 1954. She served on their board, a number of committees, the Day Care Board, taught Sunday school and Bible School. She has been a member of Beta Signa Phi since 1952 (Alpha Master Chapter) and sponsored the Kappa Zeta Chapter. She also was a past President of the Retired Teachers Association. She helped start our city’s recreation park program and later served on Mayor Joe McGuire’s Election Committee. She was a Charter Member of the Hall of Fame Committee for Mount Carmel High School and the sports Legend Committee and the Alumni Association. She won the City Tennis Tournament and the Ladies Golf Tournament one year each. She had been a member of the Wednesday Ladies Golf Association. She started a Spouse Grief Workshop and also conducted Grief Workshops. Through the years she worked at Bobbi’s Hallmark, Hirsch’s, Kiddy Land and Your Flower Shop. Betty influenced generations of children in this community. She was a gentle spirit known for her loving nature. Betty always brought out the best in her students, co-workers, cheerleaders and everyone she met. Family and friends may gather for a Memorial Visitation from 4:00 pm until 8 pm, Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at First Christian Church, 803 N. Market Street, Mount Carmel. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, September 5, 2013 at 10:00 am at First Christian Church Disciples of Christ with Reverends Jim and Jackie Summers officiating. Per Betty’s wishes she will be cremated and a private family Graveside Service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church Disciples of Christ, 803 North Market Street, Mount. Carmel, IL 62863.
