Beware of cellphone snatchers! This happened to my good friend - TopicsExpress

Beware of cellphone snatchers! This happened to my good friend Prof Bheemasena Rao, yesterday at 11AM, in broad daylight. He was walking down Bull Temple Road in Basavanagudi, Bangalore, and was talking to me on his cellphone. Suddenly the call got cut off. I tried calling him back, but I kept getting a message saying the cellphone was switched off. I assumed that his cellphones battery was dead, and gave it no further thought. Prof Rao called me this morning, to tell me that as he was talking to me, two young men on a motorcycle zoomed past and snatched his phone right out of his hand. Since it was a Sunday, there was little traffic on Bull Temple Road. The boys zoomed off and Prof Rao did not get a chance to note the bikes registration number. He promptly made a police complaint and had his service provider (Vodafone) disable the SIM card. It took him a full day to replace his SIM card. Moral of the story: Be aware of your surroundings, while using your cellphone in a public place. You never know who is stalking you. Cellphone snatchers (like chain snatchers) choose their victims carefully. They take advantage of the fact that you are distracted while talking on a phone. Avoid using your phone while walking on public roads, especially on main roads and especially on weekends, when traffic is light and snatchers can make a quick getaway. If you have to talk, keep to the footpath and as far away from the road as possible. Keep an eye open for young men on two-wheelers. Phone and chain snatchers always work in pairs. The pillion rider will make the snatch. If your phone does get snatched, make a hue and cry. Hopefully, someone may note the bikes number. Usually, the bike is stolen or will have a fake registration number, but any information you can provide the police will be helpful. Im not a great fan of Bluetooth, but if you have a Bluetooth earpiece, its a good idea to use it, rather than display your expensive smartphone in public. Be vigilant. Be safe. And yes, do share this message. SK Srinivas.
