Beyond Mars A permanent human colony on Mars? That’s the plan of Mars One, a non-profit organization led by Dutch entrepreneur Bas Lansdorp. His goal is to establish residents on the red planet by the year 2023, less than 10 years from now. Lansdorp first announced plans for the Mars One mission in May 2012. Some call the project “extremely ambitious and costly,” with a price tag of $6 billion for the first four travelers. For 1,000 years these people will be transported from the earth, which sits in desolation, after which time this “space colony” comes down from heaven and establishes this world as the new center of the universe.
