Bible Video of The Day Sunday 19th January 2014 “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world!” REFLECTION Last Sunday we celebrated the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord. This Sunday’s readings articulate the role of every baptized Christian in this world. In the First Reading the Israelites are called to be the light to the Gentiles, a theme which will be further explained in the First Reading of next Sunday. While in the Babylonian exile the Israelites were confused about their identity as the chosen people of Yahweh, Isaiah affirms their privileges position in the eyes of God. While God takes delight in His chosen people he also demands that they should contribute their mite in being the light to the Gentiles, a theme which will be further explained in the First Reading of next Sunday. In the Second Reading St Paul, the chosen vessel of the Lord, verbalizes his mission as ‘taking the name of Jesus to all.’ This Apostle to the Gentiles fought the good fight till the end for spread of the Good News, a mission of every baptized Christian. The Gospel makes a distinction between the baptism of John with water and the baptism of Jesus with the Holy Spirit. The first indicates cleansing of the past sins; the second inaugurated a new life in the Holy Spirit. While Jesus was accepting the baptism of water, he inaugurated the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit descended upon him like a dove. What difference do I experience because I am a baptized Christian?
