Big Oyster Numbers for Virginia! Virginia is clearly doing something right-or perhaps a number of things-because the numbers of last years oyster harvest are up an impressive 60 percent over the previous year, reaching a level not seen since 1987. According to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, 406,000 bushels of oysters were harvested during the 2012-2013 season, up from 257,000 bushels the previous year. Officials and scientists credited a number of factors, including a steep increase in oyster habitat, better management, harvest rotation, and growing aquaculture operations.
