How many criminal kingpins who live off extorting money from people and live the high life running vice syndicates (just an example), do we see end up behind bars? You can bet that you can list down all of the above within the digits of your two hands. Every year we are assaulted with shocking reports about wastage of millions of ringgit in tax payers’ money in the Auditor-General’s report, but the brouhaha surrounding the revelations barely lasts weeks. The people would go “this is appalling and should not be tolerated” and the authorities would say “we will ensure action will be taken against the culprits” but then what? The issue gets swept aside to the corner of a rusty closet full of skeletons as soon as the next big issue crops up.
