Big time crooks get a slap on the wrist when others committing - TopicsExpress

Big time crooks get a slap on the wrist when others committing petty crimes are dealt with the full force of the law. This is the definition of double- standard practice that is so common in Malaysia!!! quote: However, if our authorities acted as swiftly and promptly to “plug” more serious “leakages” which contributes to millions of ringgit of illicit funds flowing out the country annually, the nation would be a much better - not to mention, prosperous, place. A recent report by non-profit organisation Global Financial Integrity indicates that Malaysia ranks fourth in the list of the top 25 countries with the highest measured cumulative illicit fund outflows between 2002 and 2011. A whopping RM1.2 trillion is estimated to have flowed out of the country in the given period of time. This could be in the form of cross border transfers of funds earned illegally. It ranges from corrupt officials transferring kickbacks offshore to tax evasion by commercial entities as well as the laundered proceeds from transnational crime. There are many other cancerous elements ailing our society but unfortunately, we don’t often see them facing the music. How many times have we seen corrupt public officials or politicians being brought to book? How many corporate tax-evaders do we see being charged in court and jailed? What about cronies who had contributed absolutely nothing to the country, other than knowing the who’s who of the society? How many criminal kingpins who live off extorting money from people and live the high life running vice syndicates (just an example), do we see end up behind bars? You can bet that you can list down all of the above within the digits of your two hands. Every year we are assaulted with shocking reports about wastage of millions of ringgit in tax payers’ money in the Auditor-General’s report, but the brouhaha surrounding the revelations barely lasts weeks. The people would go “this is appalling and should not be tolerated” and the authorities would say “we will ensure action will be taken against the culprits” but then what? The issue gets swept aside to the corner of a rusty closet full of skeletons as soon as the next big issue crops up.
