Bill Griffen was an old Irishmen friend and colleague of my wife Kathy when I first met her in Rockaway Beach. The three of us being heavy into the Rockaway bar seen back then would meet while hopping along the way. From time to time Bill would become inebriated and his good friend would get him a room above Fitzgeralds and we would haul him up and put him down. Bill got sick. On his death bed a woman he had recently met had him sign over his lifes savings. He had no family we knew of. When he passed the woman took off with Bills money and mailed his ashes to Kate to avoid the cost of a proper burial which she had promised him. Bill remains on our mantle for the last 35 years and on occasions we bring him down, have a beer and speak of him with fond memories.
