Billy Bragg: Today is an historic day. For the first time in a generation, the future of our country is in the hands of the people, not the markets. The fact that 97% of those eligible have registered to vote in the independence referendum shows how seriously the people who live and work in Scotland are taking this decision. As an Englishman, I envy you having the opportunity to change your society and I hope that a Yes vote will provide a catalyst for reform in my own country. But whatever the outcome, I hope that those from both sides who were inspired by the debate to engage in the creation a fairer society will continue to work to that end. I also hope that, whatever Scotland decides, the relationship between our two peoples will remain one of close friendship and respect. Heres a Dick Gaughan song that better articulates that hope.
