Bim win, Windwards, JA take 1st innings published by ikhan on Sun, 07/21/2013 - 18:37 BASSETERRE, St Kitts & Nevis – Barbados defeated Guyana by eight wickets and the Windward Islands and Jamaica took first innings points against the Leeward Islands and Trinidad & Tobago respectively, in the first round of the Regional Under-19 three-day cricket tournament here. Led by a solid century from Aaron Jones, Barbados built a formidable first innings total of 305 all out. Jones made 143 off 273 balls which included 23 fours, spanning 249 minutes at the crease. He was well supported by Jofra Archer (37), Carlos Maynard (32) and Jameel Stuart (31). Vishoal Nayaran with 5 for 57 had the best bowling figures for Guyana. Earlier, the Guyanese were bowled out for 234 with useful knocks from Shimron Hetmyer (39) and Brian Sattur (37). Jameel Stuart’s 4 for 15 kept Guyana within target. In their second turn at the crease and 71 runs behind, Guyana found a determined Bajan team and was restricted to 111. Barbados, chasing a victory target of 41, reached 43 for 2 with Dario Boyce-Malcolm unbeaten on 23. The Windwards took first innings points over the Leewards after that match ended in a draw. Gion Benjamin (101) and Ray Jordan 40 not out, added 102 for the ninth wicket in the Windwards’ first innings total of 212. Right medium pacer Alzari Joseph took 6 for 44 and Tristan Hanley 3 for 40. The Leewards, in reply, made 185 with Jeremiah Louis 42 not out. The Windwards declared on 175 for 8, setting the Leewards a target of 203 for victory. However, at the close the home team reached 150 for 5. Jamaica also took first innings honours against Trinidad & Tobago in their drawn first round match. Sent in to bat, Jamaica made 219, backed by solid scores from Odaine Mc Catty (51) and Leroy Lug (40). Brian Charles (4 for 50) and Jovan Ali (4 for 51) were the best bowlers for T&T. Trinidad & Tobago, in reply, were 50 runs short on first innings. The Jamaicans added 110 in their second innings, setting T&T a target of 161 for victory. Despite an unbeaten 57 from Jeremy Solonzano, the Trinis were 103 for 7 when stumps were pulled. The next round of matches begin on Tuesday with leaders Barbados playing the Leeward Islands, Windward Islands against Jamaica, and Guyana facing Trinidad & Tobago.
