Blackpool Scouts call on MPs for support in our Town! On the 28th October the UK Scout Association launched their Better Prepared campaign to transform young people’s lives in the UK’s 200 most deprived areas. This was the time that the organisation was going to call on MPs, community leaders and decision-makers to pledge their support to the campaign. With support from the Youth United Foundation, Scouting is growing in many areas where young people lack opportunities – but the association wanted to do even more. We know that Scouting equips young people with the confidence and key skills to help them get on in life. We believe that the benefits of Scouting should be available to all young people, whatever their background. Blackpool has been identified as an area where the Better Prepared campaign will be working and some of our members were lucky enough to be able to make the trip to the Speaker Apartments in London. The Better Prepared campaign is part of The Scout Association’s Vision to 2018 and will make a real difference to even more young people’s lives in selected areas across the UK. The representatives from Blackpool included Connor Jackson aged 13 and Tylor Kinahan aged 12. The young people are members the 4th Blackpool Scout Group based on the Grange Park Estate. They were accompanied on the day by their Scout Leader Peter Collins and Blackpool’s District Commissioner Victoria DaSilva. Connor when asked about the day said that it has been really good. We helped the Speaker on the slack line and got to talk to lots of MPs about what we do. Tyler who had never been to London before, commented before the event making all smile after seeing the Houses of Commons by saying “Big Ben is only small!”. After this he kept on describing the day as AWESOME! Peter concluded by saying the day was really enjoyable for all and when the campaign is fully up and running it there will be lots of positive things in it. Local Scouting Ambassador Paul Maynard MP was also present at the day and he said “I was delighted to welcome Blackpool Scouts to Parliament for the launch of such a great scheme. Since becoming the MP for Blackpool North and Cleveleys I have seen on a food many occasions just what Scouting can for those young people who participate; it gives confidence, skills, experiences and opportunities. By increasing involvement in Scouts from hard to reach groups of youngsters, these benefits can be spread to a growing number of young people. As an ambassador for Scouting in Blackpool I wish this scheme, those who participate in it and all Scouting in Blackpool and the wider Fylde Coast well and I pledge to offer what support I can”.
